Crossing over to Wellington

After an exhausting drive from Greymouth to Picton, we checked ourselves in for the Interlislander, the ferry across to Wellington. Our Ferry eventually arrived, and while people stepped off the boat, we watched in awe as a whole TEN CARRIAGE TRAIN drove off the ferry! This was followed by a convoy of semi-trailers, and then a long line of cars. Yes, a TEN CARRIAGE TRAIN!! Sorry, I just couldn't get over that one.

The ferry ride over to Wellington was quite long but very scenic. As we approached Wellington, the sun was setting, and the city slowly became visible through a purple-ish haze.

Franz Josef Glacier

The drive from Queenstown to Franz Josef was miserable and rainy all the way there. I blame Phoebe! Every time she gets behind the wheel it starts to rain :p

By the time we reached Franz Josef, we thought it'd be a good time to check out the glacier. To get to the glacier you have to walk, probably for about 20 - 30 minutes.

About halfway there, it started raining and didn't look like it was going to let up, so we took some snaps of the glacier from a distance, and high-tailed it back to the car, and into town.

The town itself is tiny, and looks like one of those places you would only ever go to if you're a tourist! We celebrated Australia Day with pizza and beer at what looks like the only bar in town.

Timaru - Indykarts Indykarts!!

Road trip + no music = insanity!

We left Christchurch headed for Timaru, but our first stop was Ashburton, where we just had to buy a couple of CDs for the car. On arrival in Timaru we were greeted by a contingent of Shane's cousins, who were very keen on taking us to Indykarts for the afternoon. We had loads of fun :)

Shane's relatives treated us with a feast of the local fare, and argued about the origins of pavlova. As if it was invented in New Zealand!! :p

It has begun...

It was tough to wake up at 5.30am, after not having to wake up before midday for the last two months! Ah the joy of holidays :)

After kissing our parents and friends goodbye at Sydney International, we boarded the first of our "round the world" flights, enjoying a nice patch of turbulence on the way into Christchurch, NZ. Someone even let out a scream (yes it was Phoebe), but we landed smoothly and all was ok.

We only spent the one night in Christchurch, and it seems like a nice enough city. Didn't really do much except wander around the city centre, and sample some of the local beer, and perhaps the best steak sandwich I've ever had!
