Barcelona, Spain
Days 6 - 8
We flew into Barcelona from Madrid late on day 5, hoping for another stamp in the old passport, but to no avail *sigh*. I guess we're in the EU now which means they don't really do the whole border control thing anymore. Oh well.
Our hosts at the apartments where we stayed were eager to help us with sightseeing tips, and suggested that we have a look at "La Sagrada Familia", apparently one of the seven wonders of the world. We were a bit dubious of this "fact" since we thought the seven wonders were actually naturally occurring landmarks, but we thought we'd check it out anyway. Turns out it's a massive stone church which is and has been under construction since the early 1900's. Quite an impressive building, but since it was largely covered by scaffolding, we couldn't really see all of it.
Wandering through Las Ramblas in the centre of town later on, we couldn't help but notice all of the construction work going on - repairing footpaths, roads etc. They must be preparing for summer. We're a couple of months too early!
On our second day in Barcelona we found a cool cable car, which starts above the port and dangles high above the marina until it reaches the park below the palace. Not for those afraid of heights! From the park at the bottom of the hill, it's a long windy walk up to the palace, but the views from the top are pretty cool. Whilst walking up to the palace, we rounded a corner to see an oncoming skateboarder zigzag-ing down the hill. Followed by another skateboarder. Followed by a another one - except this one was sitting on the skateboard, with one hand in a glove scraping along the road, and the other hand holding a video camera! Crazy but true. I guess you just had to be there.
